The PS2. Remember that? Nice piece of machinery. Lots of games for it. Return to Castle Wolfenstein was one of those games, a sequel to the original Castle Wolfenstein (yes, the game that looked like Doom, 'cept you were killing Nazis instead of demons). A good, old fashioned FPS, Return to Castle Wolfenstein was met with sub-par reviews, due to it's lack of the awarding winning multiplayer that it's PC comrade boasted.
The game drops you into combat somewhere in Egypt, playing as Agent B.J. Blazkowicz, you are introduced to Operation: Resurrection and Hitler's secret little Paranormal division, much like the plot of a Mike Mignola comic. You fight yourway through a small Egyptian village, eventually fighting mummies and other undead knickknacks.
The game is a standard first person shooter, with over 17 weapons to find and wield (and of course, being an old PS2 game, your character can carry 17 weapons at once). My personal favorite is a German paratrooper rifle, and of course, the flamethrower. Some guns are severely underpowered, such as the Luger and most grenades (although holding them too long, in essence, turns you into a pile of mush).
The enemies are not altogether stupid; they will duck and hide while reloading. Some of the more advanced enemies, such as zombies and the protoype Super Soldiers, will require a little more thinking. Some super soldiers are missing legs, and will jump over 25 yards to get to you, pin you up against a wall, and electrocute you. Bosses are especially tough. The first real boss, a big hulking brute made from a host of bodies, follows you around, shooting skulls that will inflict maximum damage. The only way I managed to defeat it was running and hiding behind a gate, throwing dynamite, and ducking into a whole.
Though the graphics are severely outdated, the gameplay is challenging and memorable. Sound is basically generic, especially the "walking on metal noise" and the "Flaming Nazi noise." Some levels require you to be stealthy, while others are made easier by just running and shooting. All in all, this game provides a good, long, and cheap World War II shooting experience.
