Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth puts you in the shoes of Jack Walter, a private investigator who has just been released from the nuthouse. He can't recall the last 6 years of his life, and has fleeting memories of a raid-gone-awry at an old manor house.

And then you go to Innsmouth. A small, shabby, dirty, diseased New England fishing town. You're investigating the disappearance of a local shopkeep. Every one you meet warns you to stay away. So you explore the town for a bit, and then check into a local hotel. During the night, some fishermen sneak up on you with weapons, and after that moment, you'll never be safe again.
Call of Cthulhu is unique in that it doesn't feature any heads up display. You can't keep track of how many shots you have left, nor can you see any health bar. Instead, you shoot till you hear the tell-tale 'click' of an empty firing chamber, and you heal when you see blood spots cover your vision. You can also go into your inventory and see your individual wounds (and their respective cures).
Enemies start out as disgruntled fishermen, but the farther you progress through the story, the more corrupted the townspeople will become, until they are finally 100%... fish monster. You will also encounter aggressive crabs, frickin' evil starfish, alien sorcerers, and even a shoggoth (which resembles a gigantic sludgy mass complete with eyes and tentacles). Weapons are obtained during the third chapter of the game, but they are taken away from you somewhat frequently. When you DO have weapons, ammo is plentiful, though since reloading takes an accurately long time, you are never invincible.
Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth provides a long and immersive play through, and can be found at your local Gamestop or EB for around $10.
