Sometimes, things here at Alliance HQ can get a little technical and boring. Don’t let Captain Almighty catch me calling this work boring, but it can be – especially on the tech side of things. As much as we LOVE new peripherals and gadgets, there’s only so many times you can write about certain types of products before they start to run together. Our friends at www.ThinkGeek.com are breaking things up a bit and providing some awesomely amazing tech toys for us to play with. The latest in our series of ThinkGeek products is called “Carpet Skates.”

I know what you’re thinking – just what kind of a contraption is this exactly?! Some sort of platform to allow me to skate on carpet? You are a smart cookie.

Indeed, the Carpet Skates are essentially a smooth plastic plank that straps easily to your feet (over your shoes). The included velcro straps simply cinch around your feet and have the effect of drastically reducing friction. The smooth plastic bottoms of the Carpet Skates will allow you to slide over just about any sort of carpet or rug, and that’s pretty much the long and the short of it. Rarely do we find such simple elegance in a product. They’re Carpet Skates, and they let you skate on carpet.

Now, you may think that getting a run up to full speed would be difficult with slick-bottomed planks strapped to your feet, and again you’d be right. I told you that you were a smart cookie.

Thankfully, the manufacturers foresaw this problem and have included little plastic grip teeth on the toes of the skates. These are placed and designed perfectly to get you up and running – pun intended. Once you do, all you’ve got to do is, well, stop running and let your good friend inertia take over. Be sure to set your knees or you’re going to faceplant. If you do decide to faceplant, make sure to get it on video and send us a copy. (ThinkGeek and Game Almighty or their employees are not responsible for any injuries this may cause.)

So there you have it – the Carpet Skates do exactly what they sound like they should. You won’t get an onboard powered USB hub or remote controlled whatever – this isn’t that kind of tech toy. Go ahead and order a pair for yourself and learn firsthand that an object in motion will remain in motion until acted upon by an outside force. Yay science!
