Xbox Live Games Coming to Newly Announced Windows Phone

Microsoft has just unveiled the Windows Phone 7, a mobile phone created to compete with Android and the Apple iPhone. Early reports from tech-heads clearly indicate Microsoft has delivered an exceptional product. One of the more fascinating aspects of the new Windows Phone is the inclusion of Xbox Live. If you’re thinking it’s just a way to see if your friends are online, think again.

Microsoft says the new Windows Phone will run Xbox Live games, which I assume means Xbox Live Arcade games, titles like Geometry Wars and, perhaps wishful thinking, Trials HD. I don’t think its reasonable to think we’ll be playing Modern Warfare 2 on our mobile, at least not for a few more years.

Windows Phone will allow Xbox Live members to view Spotlight videos from the Xbox dashboard, as well as current achievements and gamer profile. Microsoft is also promoting the fact that Achievements can be earned from the Windows Phone, and those points will be added to your overall sum. Will I be able to talk to a friend over Xbox Live from my phone? Unknown, but that sure would be cool.

After the break you will find Microsoft’s Press release:

Top 5 Reasons to Buy Darwinia+ for Xbox Live Arcade

http://www.digitalbattle.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/multiwinia.jpg

Darwinia+ is finally available on Xbox Live Arcade after an extended development cycle of over four years. Darwinia+ was created by Introversion, one of the best independent game developers on the planet with several classic (and award-winning) PC games under their belt, including Darwinia+, Multiwinia, Defcon and Uplink.

Darwinia+ gets nearly everything right on the Xbox, albeit with a few caveats. First off, the price is simply too high. I personally think 1200 points is a great value considering how much gameplay is on offer, but I’m in the position of being a self-professed Darwinia+-freak and as such, have a complete understanding of the game and its concepts. This places me in the minority. Most Xbox 360 players will have never heard of Darwinia+ and will be quick to disregard it based on nothing more than its retro-graphics. Too bad, their loss.

A lower price-point of 800 would have made impulsive and/or exploratory purchases far more likely. At 1200, Darwinia+ is pricing itself away from experimentation and distancing itself from gamers who may not be able to perceive the game’s value based on the trial version. Additionally, Microsoft has been discounting a considerable number of games lately and players are well aware that a discount will hit Darwinia+ at some future date, so fence-sitters are prone to remain on their asses until the price comes down.

My second problem with Darwinia+ is the camera-scheme that kicks in when controlling a Squad. It does its best to position itself correctly, based on the elevation of nearby terrain, but it’s not what I would call perfect or some semblance of perfection. Fortunately, you can work with it and bend it towards your will by releasing control of your squad and repositioning the camera at a better angle, though it doesn’t completely resolve the problem.

True resolution of the Squad Tracking Camera issue will only be found in a patch and I see it working as such: Darwinia+ currently has two ways of selecting available squads/engineers, via bumper-buttons or directional-pad (left-right). You only need one scheme, so drop the bumpers for squad selection and use it for rotating the camera while the directional pad cycles through units. Problem solved. I waive my consultation fee.

While the camera is a minor problem at best and one that can be dealt with, the price is less surmountable. What you need are valid reason to buy Darwinia+, reasons that may not be entirely obvious in the limited trial version. Without further ado…

Sonic the Hedgehog Seeks Redemption in July, Includes iPhone Appearance

SEGA has inadvertently let the proverbial cat-out-of-the-bag about Sonic the Hedgehog’s future game appearances, evidenced by the graphic above that was located on the official Sonic 4 website. The image reveals two important elements, including a release date (July 2010) and available platforms, which include the PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade and the long-rumored and now confirmed, iPhone (and iPad).

Proof can be found here, though the image has apparently been removed by undoubtedly embarrassed representatives of SEGA.

Microsoft’s Game Room is Doomed to Fail

Microsoft made an announcement at the Consumer Electronics Show about the forthcoming spring release of Game Room, a new virtual space for players to hang out as their avatars and play classic/vintage arcade video games. Sounds fine as a basic description, but my intuition says this will be a bust.

There are several issues that will get in the way of Game Room’s success. First up we have the games themselves. Game Room will be launching with approximately 30 titles, with a promised 1000 titles within three years. That is a ton of shit and I mean that quite literally. If you can name me 20 classic video games that actually withstand the test of time, let alone 1000, I’ll send you a virtual medal.

Then there is the pricing, an area where Microsoft really understands the fine art of screwing customers. Players can either pay $5 for a dual-license that allows for PC and Xbox 360 play, or $3 for a single platform. Finally, players can sink 40-points (50-cents) for a single play.

As someone who grew up with the dawn of video games, having played just about every classic arcade title when it was actually available at my local Shakey’s Pizza, I can honestly say the vast majority of those so-called classics sucked. Add classics from vintage home consoles like Intellivision and the Atari 2600 and you have a recipe for complete boredom.

Look, I find value in these old games as museum relics and they are worth a time-limited trip down memory lane, but the overwhelming majority are just awful by today’s standards. There are only a few games from the 70s and 80s that hold up, like Asteroids, Missile Command, Galaga, Defender, Tempest, Star Castle and a few others. As for Atari 2600 games, none will hold your interest beyond a minute or two, perhaps longer if you’re bathing in nostalgia. I mean c’mon, $5 for Sub Hunt? Sea Battle? Outlaw? Ugh.

Microsoft Game Room smacks of a way to attract impulsive consumers into spending money on something that seems cool but will ultimately lead to regret. Besides, every single one of these ancient games can be played on the PC right now, complete with rule sheets and virtual cabinets, using a well-known emulator called MAME. I assume most hardcore gamers already have MAME or had it but grew bored once the novelty wore off.

If I had been in charge of developing the Game Room, I would get rid of 99% of the vintage games, only using the true classics that have aged well, and devoted the rest of the space to new and relevant XBLA (and XNA) titles like Castle Crashers, Space Invaders Extreme, Geometry Wars, etc. This would boost sales of new wares and foster increased multiplayer competition with games people actually want to play.

Unfortunately, I’m not in charge and Microsoft is wasting resources on something that will prove itself an underutilized failure. It wasnt that long ago that Xbox 360 gamers were complaining vociferously about the abundance of crappy vintage games clogging up XBLA. MS seemed to listen and reigned in the number of releases. Now MS is back with a vengeance, eyes on your wallet, hoping you will succumb to memories and ancient passions, futilely chasing Sony’s Home scheme while ripping off Nintendo’s Mii’s, all so you’ll pony up $5 to play Adventure?

Good luck with that.

Battlefield 1943: If It’s Broke, Fix It!

(This feature can also be read on InfoAddict.)

Battlefield 1943 blew the doors off the XBLA Marketplace, selling a mammoth 600,000 copies in just three days to become the fastest selling arcade game in the platform’s history. It’s a well-deserved success for a truly awesome game that finds me returning night after night for my fix.

Unfortunately, not all is well in the world of Battlefield as a few glaring problems are increasingly annoying the shit out of me. Worse, EA/DICE aren’t copping to any issues and are acting like too many other game companies by simply burying their head in the sand while they count your money.

So what needs fixing? Here goes…

Zen Pinball is an excellent pinball game for PS3 that can be purchased and downloaded from PSN. It offers four well-designed tables with plenty of strategy and frustration, crisp graphics, awesome sound and even several multiplayer options. If you love pinball, it’s a must have. If you resisted the temptation to purchase Zen Pinball and you happen to be a hardcore fan of the classic Street Fighter II, then you may be forced to lighten your wallet a tad, as Zen Studios has announced an expansion table that will pay tribute to Capcom’s classic brawler.

From the Press Release:

“This is our first expansion table for ZEN Pinball and we couldn’t be happier to bring this amazing franchise of Capcom’s over to PSN,” said Zsolt Kigyossy, managing director of ZEN Studios. “The Street Fighter II Tribute table for Pinball FX was one of the most popular XBLA downloads of all time, and with new gameplay features and enhancements we’re confident that we’ll achieve similar if not more success for ZEN Pinball.” read more…
