Which is More Lame: Sony Motion Controller Design or the Warning Siren in Bad Company 2?

Today’s gamer question is a tough one, one that can be debated until the end of time and even then a clear answer may not be attained.

Which is more lame?

PlayStation Move Sony Motion Controller

Above you see the recently introduced Sony Motion Controller. It looks like something your girlfriend or wife would use to stimulate their nether-regions; facts are facts. It is also known that the simple act of holding this horribly designed controller will reduce your testosterone and drain you of any remaining machismo.

The above video includes what has to be one of the worst ideas in sound design for a video game EVER. Whoever thought this was a good idea should go work at Infinity Ward, get fired, and be escorted out of the building under armed guard. I mean really, the warning siren in Bad Company 2 is so loud, so overbearing that it requires a volume adjustment every time it starts. Hell, it’s so bad there is a petition up on the EA boards to have it removed, a petition that now stretches 75 pages. Now, one could argue that if you don’t want to hear it then you shouldn’t lose. Valid argument. What say you?

The Easy Guide to PlayStation 2 Emulation on a PC Computer – 2010 Edition

I’ve spent the past week experimenting, tweaking, cursing and crashing in my attempts to run a solid PlayStation 2 emulator on the PC. I come to you after my brutal journey with the fruits of my labor, hopefully making your imminent adventure far more enjoyable and infinitely less frustrating.

Why would anyone want to emulate PlayStation 2 games on the PC?

Simple: PS2 games look better than they have ever looked. They look better than the original PlayStation 2 and they look better than the PlayStation 3’s built-in emulator, available only earlier models. Why do PS2 games look better with PC emulation? Because you can use the power of your video card to render games at super-high resolutions. For instance, I’m currently playing Final Fantasy XII at 1920 x 1080 with x2 Anti-Alias at a steady 60-frames-per-second! It looks freaking sweet.

Here is a little proof.

Sony Applies For More Futuristic PS3 Controller Patents

 callebest No Comments »
Behind the Games, Industry News, News

Sony quietly took another step last week in the game of catch-up they and Microsoft are playing as they attempt to capture the wave of interactivity and interest following Nintendo’s success with the Wii. It began with Sony trotting out the Sixaxis and its tilt-functionality mere months after word of the Wii-mote’s motion-detection capabilities came to light and was seen largely as a hasty “me-too” by Sony that might have cost its agreement with Immersion for force-feedback in the controller.

Little over a year ago word of Microsoft’s Project Natal was leaked and a patent filing by Sony lawyers for a break-apart “hybrid video capture and ultrasonic tracking system” was discovered followed by applications for emotion sensing controllers and tech.

Sony’s latest filing with the US Patent and Trademark Office details controllers capable of accepting a variety of attachments including a biometric reader, maracas, flashlights, and microphones.

Logitech Announces More Music Controllers to Help you Beat The Beatles.

Wireless Drum Set for the Wii

Logitech has long been the premiere maker of premium gaming hardware. We don’t feel it compromises our objectivity at all to point out that their products are reliable, have great build quality, and usually exhibit design and feature innovations that are well thought out.

Their marketing team seems to have things well planned out too as they are announcing today – on the heals of the mega-hyped release of The Beatles: Rock Band – that they are expanding their line of instrument-inspired music game controllers. If our memories serve us correctly, they first broke into this particular pocket of peripherals with their guitars for the PS3 and later the Xbox 360. [Unless you count the relatively simple USB microphones for the PS2 and Wii. - Editor] It was well received by most critics and, while we didn’t get a chance to officially review it ourselves, the time we had spent with it left us very impressed as well. Next came a PS3 drum set that, while a bit out of the average joe’s price range ($230), was head and shoulders above the Guitar Hero and Rock Band standard sets in terms of both quality and innovation.

Logitech Wireless Controller for the Wii

The new controllers expand the success of the originals onto the Wii with a wireless guitar and drum set, and finally a wireless drum set for the 360. We haven’t put our own hands on them yet, but we’ll be very surprised if they don’t have the same production quality of the original PS3 versions. Also, the press release already confirms that the drum sets for both the Xbox 360 and Wii versions will have the fantastic space-saving ability to fold up for easy storage. We hope to bring you more details as well as our own in-depth review of the units by the time they begin shipping in October. Until then you can read the rest of the features from the official press release below and see more shots of them in the linked galleries.

mad-catz-modern-warfare-2_controller

Our friends over at TechAlmighty just posted a story on Mad Catz’ announcement that they a releasing a whole slew of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 licensed accessories.

“While the press release contained no images, it did imply that some of them would be based off of existing controller designs – some of which include Saitek’s outstanding Cyborg line. What was most surprising though was that the company will be releasing two new controller designs (1 Xbox 360, 1 PS3) which will feature two new buttons located on the back of the controller. In addition to that, they are even releasing an Xbox Live compatible throat mic.”

You can read the whole story including a list and description of each peripheral and controller here.
