The most perfidious way of harming a cause consists of defending it deliberately with faulty arguments.

The reason I talk to myself is that I’m the only one whose answers I accept.

It is one thing to try to convince me of something that is tenuous at best.  But it is something else entirely to tell me that my own eyes and ears are lying to me.

So I find it a little distressing to have gaming portal 1up.com tell me that my own senses cannot be trusted.  Perhaps they assume my eyesight and hearing are so poor that I am physically incapable of watching, let alone understanding, footage of two men talking clearly and coherently into microphones while being recorded on video.

Just what am I talking about, you ask?

Nintendo is apparently feeling the heat of both Sony and Microsoft preparing to release their own motion-controller technology, chipping away at the only feature that makes the Wii unique (that and a butt-load of crappy 3rd-party games).  Shigeru Miyamoto was asked if the Nintendo was on the brink of losing its uniqueness in the face of competition.

His response:

“Well, I should say that it could be taken as a compliment if others are following suit, by saying Nintendo was right in choosing a certain direction. But if you ask me if that is going to be good for the entire business, I really don’t know.”

“If everyone else is going to do exactly the same thing, unfortunately in this entertainment business that means less uniqueness, and uniqueness is what Nintendo has tried to realize.”

“We don’t look to the future in one direction only,” he said. “When you say that one element of our uniqueness might have been lost, you don’t really have to be concerned about that, because Nintendo always tries to find something new. I hope you are looking forward to our challenge to discover this new uniqueness!”

Ghostbusters Graphics Battle – PS3 Vs. 360 – Who Wins?

 News

I thought the idea of pitting the Xbox 360 versus PS3 in terms of graphics had faded as a fad last year, but I guess there is still some life in those old bones. The latest slugfest find Ghostbusters going head-to-head on the two platforms, and unlike most of these fights, this one ends with a unanimous winner: Xbox 360.

Of course, this doesn’t mean the PS3 sucks compared to the Xbox 360…just that developers probably don’t have a clue what they are doing on Sony’s notoriously difficult platform.

Read all the details here.

Today IGN released an email indicating that it will be shutting down all of its hosted sites indefinitely due to compatibility issues with a new datacenter.

For years IGN has provided free hosting for numerous gaming websites originally offered by GameSpy.  In 2004, IGN merged with GameSpy, acquiring GameSpy.com and all of its “Planet” sites as well as other gaming websites.  IGN then continued to offer the same hosting services in exchange for selected banner placement on hosted sites.

According to the email, which points to a Hosting Shutdown FAQ, all hosting services provided by IGN will be shutdown on August 31, 2009.  The FAQ states that the “cost and resources to upgrade [the datacenter] are not realistically possible in the timeframe we have available for the move….”  IGN has therefore elected to discontinue all hosting services by August. read more…
