This is our biggest Upcoming Games yet, probably because we’re in full swing now for the holiday rush. High profile games are being released at a ridiculous pace, and gamers will have to be very selective if they don’t want to go broke. Here’s a breakdown of just some of the titles coming to shelves in October - that’s right, this isn’t even close to a complete list. However, there should be something here for everyone to look forward to next month, so let’s start the list:
Project Gotham Racing 4
Platform: Xbox 360
Release Date: 10/2/07
The other flagship racing title for the Xbox 360 is back once again. PGR3 was a launch title for the 360, so gamers are pretty familiar with it by now. PGR4 brings with it updated graphics, more cars, motorcycles, and some fantastic weather effects. Bizarre Creations has also promised a new iteration of Geometry Wars as well as a robust online mode for PGR4.
NBA 2K8
Platform: 360, PS2, PS3
Release Date: 10/2/07
Though there are several basketball titles to choose from in early October, my money is on the 2K series once again being the game to play this year. Not to say that NBA 08 and NBA Live 08 won’t be good games, but they don’t come close to the presentation, gameplay, and animation of NBA 2K8.
Spider-man: Friend or Foe
Platform: 360, DS, PSP, Wii
Release Date: 10/2/07
Who doesn’t love a classic co-op brawler? Spider-man: FoF plays like the arcade beat-em-ups of old while offering just enough depth to keep people interested. If you enjoyed Marvel Ultimate Alliance and are looking for a similar style game set in Spidey’s world, be sure to check out Friend or Foe.
Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow
Platform: PSP
Release Date: 10/2/07
Building on the success of its predecessor Dark Mirror, Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow looks like it will offer the perfect balance of tuned gameplay and new content. Gamers will once again be in a 3rd-person tactical espionage/action game with exotic locales to infiltrate. In a thrilling story penned by Greg Rucka, players can expect to travel the world while unraveling a mystery that might possibly implicate one of your own as an enemy. Your loyalties will be tested, as will your ability to stare at a small screen for hours on end when Logan’s Shadow infiltrates shelves in a few weeks.
The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Platform: DS
Release Date: 10/2/07
Link’s back in a direct sequel to the Gamecube’s Wind Waker. Utlizing touch screen controls like no other game before it, Phantom Hourglass should provide a unique yet familiar experience for players who loved Wind Waker. In addition to the singleplayer story, you’ll also find a great online competitive mode that refines the Four Swords system.
Enemy Territory: Quake Wars
Platform: PC
Release Date: 10/2/07
PC shooter fans have got a lot to play this holiday season. Those looking for a Battlefield-like experience this year will want to check out ET:QW for sure. With several different gameplay modes, unique sides to play for, and tons of vehicles Quake Wars may be one of the deepest multuplayer shooters this year. The familiar Quake universe should appeal to old-school gamers you are looking to take the fight to the Strogg once again.
Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions
Platform: PSP
Release Date: 10/9/07
This remake of the Playstation classic might end up one of the best PSP games this year. Featuring an all new translation from the Japanese original, as well as updated graphics, new stylized cutscenes, and an ad-hoc multiplayer mode, The War of the Lions is shaping up to be a must-buy for RPG or strategy fans alike.
Folklore
Platform: PS3, PSP
Release Date: 10/9/07
This Sony-exclusive action fantasy game hasn’t received too much attention, but Playstation 3 owners are keeping their eyes on it for good reason. Set in a an extremely dark modern day environment, the game stars Ellen and Keats on a quest to fight monsters called “Folk” and capture their souls. A demo was released some months ago on the Playstation Network, so check it out if you’re curious. Chances are the game will be a bit different from that demo based on the feedback from players.
