The Walkstation: Friend or Foe?

Hold on to your keyboards, if only to keep yourself from flying away. Steelcase is bringing you the Walkstation, a combination of a treadmill and computer desk. While this isn’t a new idea, it marks a cleaner version of that old HP you’ve got strapped to your lifecycle.

The station was developed by Dr. James Levine of the Mayo Clinic. Levine, a noted obesity researcher, developed the machine after one of his studies confirmed that obese people burn fewer calories than naturally lean people because they sit down on an average of 150 more minutes a day, according to the Mayo Clinic web site. Levine claims that those who use the machine will burn an extra 100 calories per hour, and estimates that fifty pounds of excess weight could be burned off after a full year of use.

The machine is intended to be used at an ambling pace, but you can be sure that injuries will start to pile up for those that aren’t content with only 100 calories an hour. Maybe a safety strap would be good addition for the hardcore office worker.

The apparatus is set to be released next month at the cozy price of $6,500, according to crave.cnet.com. An all day demonstration is set to be held in New York City on October 25th. Any of you in the area may want to strap on your best suit and head out for a nice walk in the office, no towel required.

The WalkStation is truly a revolutionary product because it is the gets people to do what nature intended. Walk. Anyone will lose weight if their diet stays constant, not just obese folks. However, 66% of americans are overweight according to the CDC and the main culprit is inactivity and ....our chairs. At $6500 it is not going to solve the problem but there are alternatives. I made my own and attached it to a treadmill. In 2 months I have lost 18 pounds and have a lot more to go but I love how energized I feel every day and the fact that when I leave my work I have worked out already....without sweating. I do want a more professional model and I found one called TrekDesk. Their site at www.trekdesk.com has some interesting articles about the health benefits of walking. It surprised me and motivated me. I will always work this way now.
