Student Denied Teaching Degree Over MySpace Photo

As the old song asks, "What would you do with a drunken sailor?" Well, if you're an official at Millersville University in Pennsylvania, you'd apparently try to keep one from earning her degree.

Stacy Snyder, a 27 year old former student at the university learned this lesson firsthand when she was told the day before graduation that she would not be allowed to receive the degree she'd been working toward. Instead the teaching degree was converted to a degree in English last year after her cooperating teacher found the MySpace-published picture. Snyder decided to take action against the school, filing a federal lawsuit seeking at least $75,000 in damages, as well as the reinstatement of her teaching certificate

The photo of Snyder, which bore the caption "Drunken Pirate", was taken during a Halloween party back in 2005. It shows her wearing a pirate hat and drinking from a yellow plastic Mr. Goodbar cup. It was posted as a part of her MySpace profile.

According to the lawsuit, Jane S. Bray, Dean of the School of Education, accused Snyder of promoting underage drinking, resulting in the decision to remove her teaching degree. Of course, there's no indication as to what was actually in the now infamous Mr. Goodbar cup. Also, basic math skills would seem to indicate that even if Snyder had been drinking in the photo, she was certainly of age at the 2005 party.

So far, there's been no official response from Millersville University on the pending lawsuit.
