It’s official, Phil Harrison has just jumped onto the sinking ship that is Atari. Harrison has just been declared, by CEO David Gardner, as the new president of parent company Infogrames.
This comes on the heels of the announcement by Harrison last week that he had left his post at Sony Computer Entertainment. Jumping onto Atari may seem like a strange decision for the former Sony business whiz, but it may be the bandage that the bleeding company needs to stay alive.
Despite a history for strange and often ridiculous remarks about the state of the gaming industry, Harrison helped Sony become what it is today, and there are hopes that he can use the same techniques to revive the ailing Atari.
"This is the perfect time to join Infogrames and help shape the future of Atari - one of the industry's legendary brands,” Harrison told gamesindustry.biz. “As the game business moves rapidly online I believe we have an outstanding opportunity to create amazing network game and community experiences for players the world over.”
It was reported by gamesindustry.biz that Harrison was leaving for Atari, but it was passed off as mere speculation until the announcement made by both Gardner and Harrison yesterday.
Gamers will have to wait and see whether this move will actually make us want to pick up an Atari game again, even if it is a few years down the line.
