Last night marker the end of yet another tax season, lifting the weight on many taxpayers' shoulders for one more year. At least that was supposed to be the case, but a flood of last minute filers using the electronic filing service in Intuit's popular TurboTax software left many taxes unfiled as the clock struck midnight.
Intuit confirmed last night that the company had underestimated the throughput on its electronic filing system, resulting in a system slowdown. As a result, many users were greeted with a dreaded message stating: "We are having temporary connection difficulties. Please try to connect again later."
Intuit immediately notified the Internal Revenue Service of the problems it was having with its E-File servers, and is working with the IRS to ensure that returns will be considered as filed on time, even if they were transmitted past the midnight deadline.
As of this morning, it looks like things are back up an running. In an updateposted on the TurboTax website: "Outstanding issues with our servers have been resolved and we are currently processing all customers' returns and requests for status checks at a normal rate … We encourage customers to continue trying to e-file; if you have been unable to successfully transmit, please try again."
