With all the talk about iPod this and iTunes that, it's easy to forget sometimes that Apple is, first and foremost, a computer company. Well, the company is looking to remind hardcore techies about its computing capabilities with the release of the new Mac Pro workstation.
Meet the latest addition to the Mac Pro family: The world’s first 3.0GHz, 8-core Intel Xeon-based Mac Pro system. The 8-core Mac Pro and offers users the power of two Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Clovertown” processors running at 3.0GHz. The system can accommodate up to four drives and 3TB of storage, offers eight DIMM slots to fill with up to 16GB of RAM, and provides up to two SuperDrives. It also gives you four PCI Express slots and lots of I/O options for ultimate flexibility.
For those people needing a high-performance workstation graphics, Apple offers a 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphics card standard, with the option of chaining up to four of the cards together for heavy graphics horsepower. The system also lets you connect up to two displays
The basic 8-core model of the Mac Pro will set users back about $4,000 US, while a maxed out Mac Pro will easily run you north of $13,000 US. The system is currently available for purchase from Apple's website.
