So Konami announced that they’ll be shutting down the server for Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence on April 2, 2007. What a load of crap. While I didn’t play it very often due to the rampant cheating, it was still an occasionally fun diversion. I have to suspect that Konami is trying to strongarm any regular players to convert to Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops’ online component. MPO is a poor replacement, as the PSP’s controls aren’t nearly accurate enough for competitive play and the display is hardly ideal for prolonged play. Let’s not forget that the PSP version doesn’t have any way to do voice chat either. It’s a pretty lame tactic, and I certainly hope this means they’ll stop selling Subsistence. As it stands now they’re going to mislead a lot of customers still purchasing it. Konami has proven time and time again that they won’t support their online titles and now I’m reluctant to purchase any further games from them with online play. Does anyone remember Amplitude? How long can we expect to get updates and support for titles like Winning Eleven soccer (especially when they release a new version every 8 months). I can’t help but be skeptical about Konami’s commitment to online gaming. Let’s hope they get back on the right track and stop screwing over the gamers who consistently support them.
