So Ocarina of Time is on the Wii’s Virtual Console and I’m oddly not compelled to play it. As a huge Zelda fan this surprises even me, but I’ll try to write through my reasons. My primary hurdle is the fact that I’d be purchasing Ocarina of Time for a fourth time. I’ve picked it up for the Nintendo 64, and twice on the Gamecube. The Gamecube versions support progressive scan so I can’t see a compelling reason to get it again on Virtual Console. Besides progressive scan, there’s really nothing added in the Virtual Console version compared to the original N64 release. In fact, one key feature has been removed: rumble. Have fun fishing without it. Nintendo’s commitment to no rumble in VC releases is extremely disappointing, especially when you play a title that used it so heavily like Ocarina of Time. I also have to question why Nintendo didn’t include the Master Quest. This complete revamp of the dungeons was included in the Wind Waker bonus disc, and would have probably been an easy addition to the Virtual Console release of OoT. Either Nintendo intends to sell it as a separate release in the future, or they’re content to pretend it never happened and we’ll never see it again. The VC’s version of Ocarina of Time gives users very little reason to buy it, unless you missed it the first time or have since gotten rid of your Nintendo 64. Sorry Nintendo, you won’t be getting my money on this Virtual Console release. Not this time.
