I’ve pretty much given up trying to figure out the numbering system on Final Fantasy games. Just when I think I have it nailed, Square Enix goes off and does something to ruin my confidence. Oh well, what do you expect from a game called Final Fantasy, when the very word ‘final’ doesn’t seem to have much merit? Almost Final Fantasy might be a better name. Or maybe We’re Almost Done Fantasy. Or, Almost There Fantasy. Whatever. Instead of going into a long history about the naming conventions of Final Fantasy, which is a feature in and of itself, let’s just say that Final Fantasy III is a new game for the DS, based on an old game originally released for the SNES but only for Japan. Well, it’s been a long wait, but Americans now have the Final Fantasy III they may or may not have been waiting for.
