Guns, Pirates, and Treasure oh my! Simply put, Uncharted: Drakes Fortune is probably one of the best adventure games to date, not just on the PS3. It takes what so many good games have done and melds it into something great, mostly with its excellent story and voice acting done by the cast. Together they capture the personality of each of the characters and pull you right in to the middle of an Indiana Jones movie.
The game centers around Nathan Drake, a wise-cracking treasure hunter following the clues in a diary found in the underwater coffin of Sir Francis Drake. The diary becomes a key puzzle solving tool, as you start to explore ancient temples and underground passageways with several traps and puzzles that only the diary can get you through. While this may seem like a trivial addition, it does wonders for making you feel connected with the character and the action on screen.
Not everything is simple puzzle solving in this one though, as you are constantly hounded by groups of pirates who are out to claim the same treasure you are seeking. You then have to fight them off with your trusty pistol and any other gun you can procure off of the fallen seafarers. The sections where you fight against these sea bandits are quite challenging, and will likely have you restarting a few times before you get the rhythm of each encounter. The enemies appear to be quite clever in battle, as they will group up around each side of you and throw grenades at your feet to try and smoke you out of your hiding spot. One of the things that makes these battles fun is your character’s reaction to the action on-screen. Drake will reply with a nice “oh s***” whenever a grenade comes his way, which is exactly what you are thinking to yourself anyway.
These run-ins can become a bit annoying at times, as you are forced to crouch for so long to regain your health while they start surrounding you bristling with all sorts of automatic weaponry. Luckily, the action manages to stay fresh when new guns start popping up in later sections, and the twist on the gameplay two-thirds of the way through will really keep you on your toes and make you wonder just what type of game you bought in the first place. The surprise is just too good to spoil here so you’ll just have to find out for yourself why this game will truly freak you.
