The radio programming in this game is probably the most questionable choice in this game. While the music does its job of fueling you on through the races, with the exception of Avril Lavigne’s “Girlfriend” popping in from time to time, the DJ manages to annoy the crap out of you. It’s not that his banter is any more annoying than any other announcer out there, but he has maybe one of the most annoying voices to grace a game in a long while. It’s just the general arrogance that flows from his mouth that probably bugs me the most, and it doesn’t help that he decides to pop in with commentary after I just lost an event by less than a second. DJ Automica is his name, annoying your ass off is his game. You would think there would be an option to get rid of his annoying voice right? Wrong. He’s there to stay, but just be thankful that iPods exist and you can drown him out with your own brand of music, whatever that may be.
On the other side of the audio page, are the absolutely wonderful crashes which are aided by the use of audio. As soon as you make that missed turn and plow right into a concrete barrier, the audio cuts out, the slow motion comes in, and you know you screwed up. Even after seeing them a thousand times the crashes are still entertaining. No matter if you smashed headfirst into a pole or just clipped a car to send yours rolling down the street, it is still fun to watch. It’s good to know that one fine Burnout staple hasn’t changed, and doesn’t look to be slowing down anytime soon.
Despite the racing events in Paradise City, there are a few other modes to look into. The Road Rage events have you running down other cars to gain a certain total of wrecks, the Marked Man events have you on the run from a group of black cars with tank like stability that are trying to wreck your ride before you reach the finish line, the stunt runs will have you trying to get the most points possible by doing barrel rolls, jumps, and insane speeds, and then there are the Burning Routes. These are car specific events that have you racing against the clock to earn a higher powered version of your current car. These are fun, but almost annoying, since it forces you to drag every car out of the junkyard to complete them. You aren’t going to want to do some of these, because though all the cars look cool, some are a real pain to try and handle.
There are three types of cars: speed, aggression, and stunt. The type of car dictates what kind of boost you have. While stunt cars earn boost by doing insane maneuvers, the aggression cars get boost by running people off the road and plowing through barriers. The speed cars are sort of annoying, as you can only use their boost if it’s full, leaving you with a lot of rage if you accidentally take your finger off the boost too early.
Overall though, this is a great racing experience for any fan of going fast. While this game is pretty shallow in terms of content, it still becomes a great pickup for some mindless fun and destruction. It may not be perfection, but it still is a Paradise.
