Joining Warhawk in Sony Computer Entertainment's ambitious initiative to bolster PlayStation Network with compelling games, SOCOM: US Navy SEALs Confrontation fits in well as on online-only play. As the most popular PlayStation 2 online series, it only makes sense to take the next installment completely online. We didn't get an opportunity to check out SOCOM: US Navy SEALs Confrontation hands-on, but we're bringing you plenty of details following its announcement in May, as well as questions posed to Sony Computer Entertainment during E3.

SOCOM: Confrontation is an online-only multiplayer game boasting a collection of maps both new and remixed from previous games in the series. Even without a single player component, all of the games maps are still themed around a specific location despite not being tied to a story. Developer Slant Six promises future downloadable maps with new locations, with the initial release featuring maps modeled after North African cities.

Beyond just scaling up to high definition, the maps will feature destructible elements intended to impact gameplay. Not everything can be blasted to bits, but you'll easily be able to shoot out an opponent's cover and force them out of hiding, for example. SOCOM: Confrontation promises full use of PlayStation 3 hardware for its materials-based physics simulation. Simply put, you can shatter glass, breakdown wooden barrels, and put holes in concrete walls; however, don't expect to take out a cement pylon or other solid structures.

Up to 32 players can compete in online matches. Maps have been scaled up to accommodate the increase in players, but don't expect wide-open expansive levels; on the contrary, Slant Six is aiming to keep the maps small, so as to encourage "intimate multiplayer combat." In short, you'll be engaging competitors left and right as you scramble for cover and hastily fire against your foes. Vehicles won't make it for the initial launch, leaving combat an on-foot affair; however, it's being hinted that a future update could introduce motorized transport into the mix.

Other content being considered for potential add-ons include customizable equipment, weapons, and special options for advanced players. Right out of the gate, you'll be able to personalize your SEAL's uniform, as well as select from a limited arsenal of gear. Interestingly, you can even change up small details like your outfit's camouflage pattern. Customizable uniforms will be beneficial for clan leaders, in particular, who can tweak an outfit and distribute the design to members for wear during matches.

With a November release, SOCOM: Confrontation still has a few months of development left. We're eager to see progress on the game, particularly the visual presentation which could use a nice layer of polish. As a PlayStation Network, multiplayer-only game, it could be somewhat forgivable, especially if SOCOM: Confrontation manages to deliver on the promise of an intimate combat experience.
